CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

I bolt upright in bed and gasp, searching the room. I appear to be in a patient room.

Startled, Jarett launches himself out of the chair next to the bed. “What’s wrong?”

Memories of the last few days click into place, one by one. I know how I ended up in the hospital. I remember everything. I need to find Levi. Immediately.

I’m climbing out of the bed when Jarett rushes over to stop me. “Stop. Stop. Stop! Sadie, stop! You’re going to rip your IV line out.”

“Good point,” I say and start peeling off the tape.

Jarett grabs both my hands in his. “Look at me. You have a head injury.”

“Levi. He’s the recruiter. He almost killed us. He’s dangerous, Jarett. We have to get him.”

“You’re supposed to be resting.”

“I can’t rest. We have to catch him. Amelia is in danger with him on the loose.”

My voice catches as I add, “And she’s in danger because of me. I have to make this right.”

“Can you honestly say you’re up for it?”

“Yes.”

“Your head feels fine?”

My head feels like what I imagine Wile E. Coyote must feel like after having a boulder dropped on him. When I hesitate to answer, he says, “That’s what I thought.”

I glare at him.

He releases my hands and says, “You can help us catch him.”

I shift my position and start peeling the tape off my IV again.

“From this bed,” he finishes.

“What?”

“You can help us from this bed by telling me everything you remember. Anything that will help us locate him. So far, surveillance hasn’t had any luck.”

I play along because my head hurts too much to argue with Jarett, but there is no way I’m staying in this bed. Not when Levi is on the loose due to my catastrophic failure. “Have you tried his hometown?”

“His entire school record is fabricated, as far as we can tell. I’m betting he’s not even college age.”

“That’s ironic. Considering, neither am I.”

The painkiller the doctor gave me is making my thoughts fuzzy, so I fight to part the clouds and think through the events of the day.

“We have to find Asadi,” I exclaim. “Levi is recruiting him. He drove my car into the lake to dispose of it. But Levi really had to pressure him. I don’t think he’s as committed. Or crazy, for that matter.” I shudder thinking about the smile on Levi’s face when he pointed the gun at me.

“Already looking,” Jarett answers. “No luck so far.”

“He might be easier to track down. He doesn’t seem as careful or calculated as Levi.”

I yawn and struggle to focus. Digging my nails into the palms of my hands, I fight the sleepiness creeping over me.

“Tell the doctor to cut back on the pain meds,” I slur. “I need to be able to think clearly.” And to get out of this bed.

Just before the black oblivion of sleep claims me, I say, “Have someone talk to Amelia. She knows everything that happened today.”
